It is October 26, 2011, one day before you’re set to arrive. And before we get all wrapped up in the excitement of finally bringing you home, I thought I’d put a few thoughts down on paper for you. I know it will be years and years down the line before you’re even interested in reading this (I hope you will be someday, though), and there were just a few things I wanted to remember, and I wanted you to know.
The weather has just begun to make a real Fall-like turn. Late September was much warmer than usual, and it made for some definite discomfort for your mother. Our first frost is yet to hit, but the evening temperatures have been hovering at the 40 degree mark for several nights. Today it is overcast, but the weather is set to be bright and sunny tomorrow. How appropriate.
You should first know that although your coming into being was a surprise, your mom never had a moment’s doubt about you. You were loved from Day 1. We have spent the last many months preparing for your arrival. It seems not a week goes by that there isn’t a package being delivered to the door. Upon seeing your first ultrasound picture, I dubbed you Peanut, because that’s all you looked like. Now when we look at the pictures, we can make out actual features - at least when you don’t have a fist in front of your face.
I’ve just spoken with your mom, who is only now getting out of bed (at almost 2:00 in the afternoon). She’s so excited for you to be here, and so uncomfortable at the same time, that she kind of prowls the house at night, only making it to bed in the wee hours. She spends a lot of time fussing in your bedroom, and she’s already started a memento box for you.
Your name has caused quite a stir in our little circle. Some associate ‘Bently’ with the car (which I don’t think your mom was even aware of), and others associate it with a couple of popular TV shows. None of these were an influence, and I’m not exactly sure where your mom came up with the name. She and I talked over several ideas for a middle name, and I ran across ‘Rhys’, which is Welch, I believe. No particular significance. We just both liked the name, and I liked the spelling, which I associated with a couple of British actors I like.
I’ll be leaving work soon on my way to collect your mom and run out to Bubba’s house. Your great-aunt, Alison, has arrived today, so we’ll visit with her for a while before heading home and preparing for your debut into the world. I have to make a stop, though, because your mom has been wanting to purchase a copy of ‘Love Me Forever’, and I thought I’d pick it up as a gift in anticipation of a long day tomorrow. Do me a favor, and don’t take too much time getting here, though. She is still MY baby, and I want this to be as easy on her as possible.
I look forward to meeting you soon….
Your Amma
